Peace is a term used to describe a state of affairs that is absent any major conflict. The word peace has been used in many contexts throughout history. In the study of history, the word peace appears in this context if there were no wars between nations or tribes. In the personal sense, the word peace has been ever-evolving and means different things to different people. - Religious/Spiritual: Many people advocate adherence to a certain religious or spiritual doctrine to help them find peace. Such doctrines include Buddhism, which teaches meditation and personal introspection to assess one's life or life events, and Christianity, which teaches prayer and reliance on a higher power. These doctrines help many to find peace but are ineffective for some.
- Philosophical: Several structured philosophies have been developed with the intent of helping individuals find peace. One of the most famous western philosophical systems to attempt this is Stoicism, which teaches that most things are beyond the control of the individual and are not really worth fretting over. This philosophy is quite useful today as it was in the ancient Roman Empire where it was developed.
