General Information
Cooking is the common practice of using heat to prepare foods into a meal. Heating methods vary and can include ovens, grills, stovetops, fire pits, fireplaces, and microwaves. Cooking generally is most necessary when using meat, eggs, or grains. Uncooked meats and eggs can be dangerous, often containing parasites and harmful bacteria. Grains require cooking due to their hard or inedible nature when raw. For, example, rice is easier to eat once it has been boiled and softened.

Cooking Practices
Although many edible items do not require cooking before they are safe to eat, people generally cook them to combine flavors and enhance taste. It has become an expectation to be served warm food, regardless of what the contents are. People frequently combine meat, dairy, root, and plant food ingredients in the cooking process to allow the flavors to simmer together. Some examples of all-inclusive dishes include soups, pies, stews, and casseroles.

Careers

Cooking is the basis of many careers today. The restaurant and other food industries require cooking professionals, also known as chefs. There are many different venues where chefs are required.
  • Fast Food Businesses: Fast food businesses require workers to prepare food for customers in a fast and sanitary manner. Fast food restaurants employ millions of people worldwide.
  • Restaurants: Restaurants require the help of chefs to prepare food for customers. Chain restaurants generally limit chefs to the menus that are used in each and every restaurant. Some restaurants, however, allow their chefs to experiment and add items to the menu.
  • Hospitals: Hospitals contain cafeterias and employ many chefs and food preparers.
  • Private Hire: Wealthy people are able to hire full-time personal chefs to cook their food for them. Some chefs are also available for hire for onetime events such as weddings, birthday parties, or other special occasions.
